For instance, in the sentence, “I like apples, oranges, and bananas,” the comma before “and” is the serial comma. Its presence or absence can significantly alter the meaning of a sentence.
Clarity is a primary reason for its use. Its inclusion often eliminates ambiguity, preventing misinterpretations that can arise from sentences lacking a clear separation between list items. Historically, disputes over the correct interpretation of contracts and legal documents have highlighted its significance.
