These small sharks often hunt in packs, aggressively pursuing their prey, a behavior that has been likened to that of wild dogs hunting in groups. This pack-hunting style may have led observers to associate them with canines, hence the descriptor “dog.”
Another possible origin relates to the perceived nuisance these sharks presented to fishermen. Dogfish are known to be persistent and often damage fishing nets or consume caught fish, essentially “stealing” from the fishermen’s catch. This annoying habit could have resulted in the derogatory label, implying that they are as unwanted and bothersome as a stray dog.
